PRP Effective For The Most Common Causes of Pain

If you live with chronic joint pain or tendon injuries, you have likely heard about Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy. PRP uses a concentration of your body’s own blood platelets—rich in growth factors—to help stimulate tissue repair. A growing body of clinical research shows that PRP is proving to be a safe, effective alternative to traditional treatments like corticosteroid injections. Recent meta-analyses and trials detail its benefits for four common orthopedic conditions:
1. Knee Osteoarthritis: Lasting Relief Driven by Platelet Concentration
Knee osteoarthritis (OA) occurs when protective cartilage gradually wears down, causing pain, stiffness, and reduced mobility.
A comprehensive meta-analysis of 18 randomized controlled trials involving nearly 2,000 patients found that PRP offers meaningful pain relief and functional improvements over placebos at 3, 6, and 12 months.

High-platelet PRP (concentrations above ~1,000,000 platelets/µL) delivered significant, long-lasting pain relief and improved joint function up to a full year.
Low-platelet PRP provided temporary functional improvements, but failed to show meaningful long-term pain relief compared to placebo.

2. Tennis Elbow: PRP More Effective Than Cortisone Long-Term
Lateral epicondylitis, commonly known as tennis elbow, causes localized pain on the outside of the elbow due to repetitive stress on forearm tendons.
While cortisone (steroid) injections are traditionally used for quick pain management, clinical trials comparing PRP to steroids show a distinct shift in outcome after the initial recovery phase:
Short-Term: Cortisone offers fast, temporary relief within the first few weeks by blunting localized inflammation.
Long-Term (3+ Months): Cortisone’s benefits decline rapidly, while PRP’s restorative effect takes over. At 3 months and beyond, PRP provides superior, longer-lasting pain relief and functional restoration without the risk of long-term tendon weakening associated with repeated steroid use.
3. Low Back Pain: PRP An Effective Alternative for Degenerative Spine Conditions
Low back pain is a leading cause of disability worldwide, often stemming from worn down ligaments, degraded intervertebral discs, and/or inflamed facet joints.
A systematic review examining 40 clinical studies (including 13 randomized clinical trials) concluded that PRP is a safe and generally effective therapy for chronic, degenerative low back pain.
Across most clinical trials, patients receiving spinal PRP injections experienced significant reductions in pain and disability scores.
Because PRP uses autologous blood (drawn directly from the patient), treatment carried a low risk of adverse side effects or tissue damage compared to repeated epidural steroid injections.
4. Rotator Cuff Tendinitis: Modest, Long-Lasting Shoulder Improvement
Rotator cuff tendinitis and partial tendon tears cause nagging shoulder weakness, aching, and restricted movement.
A meta-analysis comparing PRP injections directly against subacromial corticosteroid injections found a clear pattern:
1 to 3 Months: Pain relief and shoulder function were comparable between both groups.
6+ Months: PRP demonstrated clear superiority over corticosteroids. At six months, patients in the PRP group reported significantly higher shoulder function scores (measured by ASES and Constant–Murley scales), lower pain levels, and fewer adverse events.
The Takeaway
Across multiple joint and tendon conditions, PRP offers a distinct therapeutic profile compared to traditional treatments:
Fast-acting (1–4 weeks) ───► Corticosteroids (Rapid relief, declines over time)
